ADSL Broadband Services
For many years the promise of a reasonably priced, always on, faster way to access the Internet has always been just around the corner. However, in the UK at least, we seem to have been stuck with the same old choices - cheap but slow access using a modem or always on, expensive access using leased lines.
Now, there is a third choice, that does provide reasonably priced, high performance internet access, available 24 hours a day without any call charges. This new choice is ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line).
ADSL is a method of delivering high bandwidth services into your home or office, using the same copper cable that delivers your existing telephone service. ADSL is capable of providing access to the Internet at up to 2Mbit/s, which is over 35 times faster than a normal modem.
The equipment that enables ADSL to work is already installed in over 500 BT local telephone exchanges, providing access to 35% of homes and businesses right now. By mid 2001 50% of homes and businesses should be in an ADSL enabled area with 70% coverage by the end of 2001. You can use BT's online ADSL Availability Checker to see if you are in an ADSL enabled area of the country.
